Requirements for Marriage | Wedding Vendors

Whether you are a resident of Currituck County or a visitor looking for a beautiful "destination wedding," Currituck County offers some of the most beautiful wedding backdrops on the Outer Banks.

Marriage licenses can be obtained at the Register of Deeds office on the mainland. Marriage licenses may also be obtained in any county in North Carolina. Magistrates may perform wedding ceremonies in Currituck County and can be reached at (252) 232-3404. For details on obtaining a marriage license, call (252) 232-3297.

Requirements for Marriage in North Carolina

Age
All persons of 18 years and older may lawfully marry. In addition, persons at least 16 years of age and under 18 years of age may marry, provided they have written consent of parent(s) having custody and a certified birth certificate. A Notary Public or the Register of Deeds must sign the consent forms.

Identification
Both a Drivers License AND a Social Security card is required from the bride and groom.

Waiting Period
There is no waiting period before or after obtaining the marriage license, and the license is valid for 60 days.

Divorce
Divorced applicants must bring a copy of their divorce decree, if the divorce has been finalized within the last 30 days. If one has been divorced for more than thirty days, one must simply provide the month and the year that the divorce had been finalized.

Obtaining a Marriage License
Both bride and groom must appear in person with the identification mentioned above to purchase their marriage license. The cost of the marriage license is $50. The Currituck County Register of Deeds is opened from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, for marriage licenses. Marriage licenses will not be issued after 4 p.m. Please allow yourself plenty of time.
